Iran’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been overshadowed by logistical and political challenges after the Iranian Football Federation(FFIRI) confirmed that the national team has received entry visas to the United States, although not every member of its delegation was granted permission to enter.
The development comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing military conflict in the region, creating a complex backdrop for one of Asia’s strongest national teams as they prepare for football’s biggest tournament.
According to officials from the Iranian Football Federation, the United States approved visas for the Iranian squad to participate in the World Cup. However, several members of the wider delegation were reportedly denied entry, with American immigration authorities issuing what has been described as visas on a strictly limited and necessary basis.
Among those not granted permission to enter the United States is Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, highlighting the unusual circumstances surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.
As a result of ongoing security concerns, Iran have also been forced to adjust their World Cup preparations. Rather than establishing their training base in the United States, Team Melli will conduct their camp in neighboring Mexico and travel to match venues as required.
Further details were revealed by Iranian Ambassador to Mexico Abolfazl Pazandideh, who stated that the Iranian delegation would not be permitted to remain overnight in the United States outside of official competition requirements.
Under the current arrangements, the team is expected to return to Mexico immediately after completing its matches in the United States, where Mexican authorities have pledged continued support and hospitality throughout the tournament.
Despite the off-field complications, Iran remain focused on their World Cup campaign and will be determined to make an impact on the pitch.
Iran has been drawn into a challenging Group G, alongside New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. And will begin against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium on 16 June, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 AM (Malaysian time)
