Lando Norris delivered a statement victory at the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, securing both his and McLaren’s first Grand Prix win of the 2026 season after surviving an intense intra-team battle, strategic twists, and late-race drama at the Hungaroring.

The reigning Formula 1 World Champion crossed the finish line 15.080 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third. The race, however, will be remembered as much for Oscar Piastri’s heartbreaking retirement as Norris’ long-awaited breakthrough.

Starting from pole position, Norris initially controlled the opening stages before teammate Oscar Piastri executed a brilliant move at Turn 2 on the opening lap to snatch the lead.

For much of the first half, McLaren looked comfortably on course for another one-two finish, with Piastri holding Norris behind while the team resisted radio requests from Norris to be allowed through.

The race changed dramatically after the midway point.

Following his second pit stop, Piastri encountered Williams driver Carlos Sainz while navigating traffic exiting Turn 2. Contact between the pair disrupted the Australian’s momentum, allowing Norris—who had produced exceptional pace in clean air—to gain the crucial strategic advantage after his own second stop.

From that moment onward, the championship leader never looked back.

McLaren’s hopes of celebrating a dominant one-two ended in devastating fashion when Piastri suffered an apparent gearbox failure with just 15 laps remaining.

The Australian was forced to park his car trackside, triggering a Virtual Safety Car period that reshuffled the battle for the remaining podium positions.

Verstappen and Antonelli, who had already completed their pit stops, benefited from the neutralisation to secure second and third respectively.

Ferrari appeared poised to challenge for a podium finish after Lewis Hamilton’s aggressive three-stop strategy.

However, the seven-time World Champion received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him behind teammate Charles Leclerc in the final classification.

Leclerc ultimately finished fourth, Hamilton fifth, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar produced another impressive drive to take sixth.

George Russell recovered brilliantly after an anti-stall issue at the start dropped him from seventh to 19th on the opening lap. The Mercedes driver fought back through the field to finish seventh.

Racing Bulls also celebrated another double points finish as Liam Lawson claimed eighth ahead of Audi veteran Nico Hulkenberg and rookie Arvid Lindblad.

Aston Martin delivered one of its strongest weekends of the season, with Lance Stroll finishing 13th and Fernando Alonso 14th in the team’s upgraded package.

Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto finished either side of the Aston Martin duo for Alpine, while Haas and Williams endured another disappointing outing.

Three drivers failed to finish the race:

  • Oscar Piastri (gearbox issue)
  • Sergio Perez (front-left mechanical problem)
  • Valtteri Bottas (overheating brakes)

Norris’ victory arrives at a crucial stage of the championship, not only ending McLaren’s win drought in 2026 but also reinforcing his credentials as the driver to beat.

For McLaren, the result is bittersweet. While Norris finally converted their pace into victory, Piastri’s retirement denied the Woking outfit what looked destined to be a commanding one-two finish.

With Verstappen limiting the damage in second and Antonelli continuing to impress with another podium finish, the Formula 1 title battle remains fiercely competitive as the championship heads into its next round.
