Malaysia hockey national team out of tournament after losing to Australia hockey national team, scoring 2-5 in the FIH Junior World Cup 2023 Group Stage, Pool A at Hockey National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia conceded three goals to Australia in the first 15 minutes through goals from Cooper Burns in the second minute, Jake Lambeth in the 6th minute and Cambel Geddes in the 15th minute.
Malaysia came back to close the gap through Harris Iskandar Osman’s goal in the 21st minute before Australia extended their dominance again through Lambeth’s second personal goal six minutes later.
Hosts Malaysia did not give up and scored a second through Shafiq Ikhmal’s Daniel Suzaini field goal in the 44th minute, but it only lasted a minute before Australia made it 5-2 through Geddes’ penalty corner.
The situation seemed to have ‘killed’ the spirit of the players to try to find something in the last 15 minutes, and they had to accept the fact of failing to reach the quarter-final target.
However, Malaysia’s struggle in the tournament is not yet over, as they have to play the ninth to 16th place decider against Egypt on Monday.
