Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) head coach Hector Bidoglio has expressed his gratitude to the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ) for approving the signing of Anselmo Moraes, as the Southern Tigers gear up for a crucial AFC Champions League Elite 2024/25 against Pohang Steelers.
Speaking ahead of the high-stakes clash at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Bidoglio emphasized the importance of the match and the readiness of his squad.
“Our initial target was to qualify, now we have a real chance. Tomorrow night, we need to show our style of play in front of our own fans.”
JDT will be without Spanish midfielder Roque Mesa, who is sidelined with a serious knee injury. However, the arrival of Anselmo Moraes, along with the availability of Murilo Cerqueira and Juan Muniz, boosts their defensive options.
“Anselmo arrived two days ago, and like any player, he needs time to adjust. But with his vast experience, he is here to help the team.”
Bidoglio also praised the professionalism and commitment of his players, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the squad.
“Boss (TMJ) always knows the right time and situation to motivate the players. We are in the best situation, both on and off the field.”
JDT defender Matthew Davies has issued a warning to Pohang Steelers, stating that the Korean side will face a vastly improved JDT compared to their last encounters in 2021, where the Southern Tigers suffered back-to-back defeats.
“We are not looking at this as a revenge mission, as the squads are completely different. But this match is crucial because of our ambitions in the ACLE.”
Davies believes that JDT’s growth and experience over the past few years will make this a far more competitive match.
“We’ve improved a lot and gained more experience. Tomorrow will be a completely different game.”
With a spot in the Round of 16 at stake, JDT will be eager to make a statement against Pohang Steelers. The home advantage at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium could be a key factor in their quest for a historic ACLE campaign.
