Gabriel Nistelrooy, striker of Johor Darul Ta’zim II has emerged as the top scorer in the Piala MFL 2024/25, cementing his place as one of Malaysia’s most promising local forwards.
With 9 goals to his name, the Sarawak-born player is making headlines for his consistency in front of goal, while acknowledging that there is still plenty of room for improvement as he strives to sharpen his skills further.
At 24 years old, Gabriel’s remarkable form in the MFL Cup has been a key factor in JDT II’s success this season. Despite his impressive goal tally, he remains grounded, recognizing the importance of continuous development to become an even more effective striker.
“Yes, I’m quite satisfied with scoring a lot of goals, but there’s still much more I need to work on,” Gabriel admitted.
“My teammates have been instrumental in helping me improve, especially in training sessions. Their support is crucial in my quest to score more goals.”
Gabriel’s rise to prominence comes at a time when Malaysia is seeking more standout local strikers, a role he embraces with determination.
“In Malaysia, we currently lack local strikers. As a forward, my goal is to give everything I have and seize every opportunity to contribute,” he explained, underscoring his commitment to fulfilling the potential that many have recognized in him.
His exceptional performances in the MFL Cup have not gone unnoticed by Johor Darul Ta’zim’s main squad, where Gabriel has had the privilege of training alongside top-tier players such as Brazilian striker Bergson Da Silva. These experiences have provided invaluable lessons and insights into improving his game.
“Training with JDT’s main squad has been a great opportunity for me. I’ve been able to learn from experienced strikers like Bergson, who often offer advice on areas I can improve,” Gabriel said.
“Their guidance has been instrumental in helping me become a better player.”
While leading the MFL Cup’s goal-scoring charts is a significant milestone, Gabriel is focused on collective success.
“Of course, I want to be the top scorer, but what’s more important is winning the MFL Cup and helping my teammates achieve that goal,” he emphasized.
JDT II’s recent 3-0 win over Kuching City FC has solidified their place at the top of the MFL Cup standings, with 20 points, as they push toward a potential championship. Gabriel Nistelrooy’s contributions continue to drive his team’s success, and with his sights set on further improvement, he remains a key player to watch in the Malaysian football scene.
