United States have received a major boost ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 showdown against Belgium after FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision means the American striker will be available for selection despite being sent off during the USA’s 2-0 victory in the Round of 32.
Balogun was shown a straight red card after catching an opponent on the ankle during the knockout match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Under normal FIFA disciplinary regulations, a direct red card carries an automatic one-match suspension with no right of appeal.
However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has now opted to suspend the sanction, allowing the 25-year-old forward to feature against Belgium.
Instead of serving an immediate ban, Balogun has been placed on a one-year probationary period.
Should he commit another similar violent offence within the next 12 months, the suspended one-match ban will automatically be enforced in addition to any new disciplinary punishment.
The ruling is a significant lift for head coach Mauricio Pochettino as the United States prepare for one of their toughest tests of the tournament.
Balogun has been a key figure in the American attack throughout the World Cup, and his availability strengthens the host nation’s hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals.
The USA booked their place in the Round of 16 after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, despite playing with 10 men following Balogun’s dismissal.
With Balogun now cleared to play, the United States will head into their Round of 16 meeting with Belgium at full strength, aiming to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
The decision provides a timely boost for the co-hosts, while also highlighting FIFA’s willingness to apply conditional disciplinary measures in exceptional circumstances, allowing players to continue competing provided they maintain good disciplinary records over the designated probation period.
