Denmark thwarted England’s hopes of early qualification for the knockout stage by securing a 1-1 draw in the UEFA EURO 2024, Group Stage, Group C at Frankfurt Arena, Frankfurt.
England took the initiative early in the match, demonstrating their attacking prowess. In the 18th minute, Harry Kane put England ahead after receiving a precise pass from Kyle Walker. Kane’s composed finish past Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel gave Gareth Southgate’s side a 1-0 lead.
Denmark responded by increasing their pressure on the English defense. Their efforts paid off in the 34th minute when Morten Hjulmand’s shot from outside the box found the back of the net, eluding Jordan Pickford’s grasp. This goal marked the first time England had conceded in the group stage of the Euros since Gareth Bale’s goal in the 2016 edition.
England came close to regaining the lead in the 56th minute when Phil Foden’s shot struck the post, leaving the Manchester City player frustrated. The English attack continued to press, seeking the crucial second goal.
In the 71st minute, substitute Ollie Watkins, who had replaced Harry Kane, broke free of the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Schmeichel. However, the Danish goalkeeper made a crucial save to deny Watkins, keeping the score level.
Despite continued efforts from both sides, neither team could find the winning goal. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the group standings tightly contested.
