DPMM FC is rumored to be joining the Liga Super Malaysia for the 2025/26 season, marking a historic return to Malaysian football after 17 years.
Malaysian media reports suggest that discussions are underway for the Bruneian club to rejoin Malaysia’s top-tier league.
DPMM FC has been a mainstay in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) since 2009, except for interruptions in 2010-2011 due to Brunei’s FIFA suspension and in 2021, when they played in their domestic league due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 13 seasons in the SPL, they established themselves as one of the top teams, winning the league in 2015 and 2019.
If their entry into the MSL is confirmed, they will become the first foreign club to participate in the league since Singapore’s Lions XII left in 2016.
Despite their potential inclusion, DPMM FC will not be eligible for AFC club competitions even if they qualify, as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) does not recognize clubs competing in leagues outside their home country.
However, their participation could add a fresh competitive dimension to the MSL, expanding the league’s regional appeal while giving Brunei’s top club a bigger platform to showcase its talent.
While no formal announcement has been made, if DPMM FC secures approval, it will mark their second stint in Malaysian football after competing in the Malaysia Premier League from 2005 to 2008. Their return could reignite old rivalries and bring a new dynamic to the league.
The final decision rests with the MFL, and fans across Malaysia and Brunei eagerly await further developments.
