Malaysian pair beaten in 31 minutes as the Indonesians dominate the opening game

Malaysia’s Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik finished as runners-up at the Denmark Open 2026 after losing 21-8, 21-11 to world No. 3 pair Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia in the men’s doubles final at the SJF Bank Arena in Odense on Sunday.

The match, which had been billed as a fierce contest, turned into a one-sided one. Fajar-Fikri were far better in the opening game and ran away with it 21-8.

The world No. 4 pair started the second game reasonably well, but Fajar-Fikri’s momentum was too much, and they struggled to pick up points. The match was over in 31 minutes.

It was a reversal of the sides’ last meeting, at the Malaysia Open in January, when Aaron-Wooi Yik won 23-21, 21-18. The two pairs have now met five times, with three wins to Fajar-Fikri.

Aaron-Wooi Yik had gone through to the final with a 21-14, 21-18 win over world No. 1 pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae in the semi-final. The last Malaysian pair to win the Denmark Open were Aaron-Wooi Yik in 2023.

Even so, the runners-up finish capped a good week for Malaysian badminton. Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah won the women’s doubles title on Sunday, and teenagers Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim won the girls’ doubles at the World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday. It is a first world junior title for Zi Yu, 16, who had lost two previous finals.

Fajar-Fikri earned US$70,300 (RM287,048) and the trophy. Aaron-Wooi Yik took home US$33,250 (RM136,766.40).
