George Russell delivered a commanding performance to secure Sprint Qualifying pole position for the Chinese GP 2026, spearheading a dominant showing from Mercedes as teammate Kimi Antonelli completed a front-row lockout at the Shanghai International Circuit.
The British driver set the benchmark throughout Friday’s action, topping the sole practice session before leading all three segments of Sprint Qualifying. His decisive lap of 1:31.520 in SQ3 on soft tyres proved untouchable, finishing nearly three-tenths ahead of Antonelli.
The young Italian initially faced scrutiny after a suspected impeding incident involving Lando Norris during SQ2, but race stewards ultimately took no further action, confirming his place on the front row.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris emerged as best of the rest in third place for McLaren, though the gap to Russell was significant at over six-tenths of a second.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton slotted his Ferrari into fourth position, splitting the McLaren pair and finishing just ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri in fifth.
Charles Leclerc followed in sixth but was nearly one second off Russell’s pace, highlighting Mercedes’ clear advantage during Sprint Qualifying.
Further down the order, Pierre Gasly placed seventh for Alpine F1 Team, while reigning champion Max Verstappen struggled to eighth with Red Bull Racing after complaining about drivability issues.
The top ten was completed by Oliver Bearman of Haas F1 Team in ninth and Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar in tenth.
Sprint Qualifying also delivered several surprises. Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed the SQ3 cut by just 0.015 seconds, leaving the Audi F1 Team driver set to start the Sprint from 11th.
Behind him were Esteban Ocon (Haas) and Liam Lawson of RB Formula One Team, followed by rookie contenders Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad.
Meanwhile, Williams Racing endured a disappointing session with both Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon eliminated in SQ1 alongside Aston Martin F1 Team drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
At the back of the grid, the Cadillac F1 Team locked out the final row, with Valtteri Bottas ahead of Sergio Perez, the latter unable to set a time due to a fuel system issue.
