Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin concluded their remarkable run at the China Masters 2024 with a hard-fought second-place finish, falling to world No. 2 and local favorites Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping in a thrilling 96-minute final on Sunday (Nov 24).
The Malaysian duo, ranked world No. 23, pushed the top-seeded Chinese pair to the brink before succumbing 23-21, 23-25, 16-21 at the Shenzhen Gymnasium. Pang Ron-Su Yin came agonizingly close to a stunning upset, holding match point at 22-21 in the second game after securing the first. However, they could not convert the opportunity against the experienced Feng and Huang.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, their journey to the final was nothing short of extraordinary. The rising stars upset world No. 3 Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the quarterfinals and dispatched world No. 7 Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong in the semifinals, showcasing their grit and growing potential on the international stage.
The runners-up finish marks the pair’s best achievement since teaming up last year, cementing their status as one of Malaysia’s most promising mixed doubles partnerships.
