Cerezo Osaka have confirmed the signing of Dion Cools on a permanent transfer from Thai champions Buriram United, strengthening their defensive ranks with one of Southeast Asia’s most accomplished internationals.
The 28-year-old, who has been a key figure for both club and country, will officially link up with his new team following his international duty with Malaysia for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers. Cools is set to begin his national team commitments on June 5, with his arrival in Osaka scheduled shortly after.
Cools, known for his versatility, composure, and tactical intelligence, brings significant European and Asian football experience to Cerezo Osaka. A product of the Club Brugge academy, he previously featured in the Belgian Pro League, Danish Superliga, and Thai League, earning praise for his consistency and leadership.
His move to the J.League represents a major milestone, not only in his career but also for Malaysian football—marking another national star’s entry into one of Asia’s most competitive leagues.
In his first statement as a Cerezo Osaka player, Cools expressed both pride and excitement about this new chapter:
“I’m truly happy to have the opportunity to come to Japan and Osaka, and I’m very grateful for this chance. I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff, and all the fans and supporters as soon as possible. I will give my all to help the team win as many games as possible and achieve our goals. Thank you for your support.”
