The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has officially ushered in a new era for the national senior squad, appointing South African tactician Brendon Carolan as the new Head Coach of the Speedy Tigers.
The announcement was made by MHC President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, who confirmed that the tenure of former coach Sarjit Singh has come to an end, with the board electing not to renew his contract.
“The Executive Board has decided, and as President, I am informing you that we will not be extending Coach Sarjit’s contract,” Subahan stated, as reported by Astro Arena’s Faizal Bazari.
Brendon Carolan is far from a stranger to the Malaysian hockey landscape. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to build on the foundations he previously helped lay.
- The Arul Selvaraj Era: Carolan served as a key assistant coach under Arul Selvaraj, a partnership that famously guided Malaysia to their historic 2022 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (SASC) title.
- Global Experience: He was instrumental in Malaysia’s qualification and performance during the 2023 Hockey World Cup.
- Tactical Reinforcement: Since being brought back into the fold last February, Carolan has been the mastermind behind the team’s strategic and tactical evolution.
Carolan’s immediate impact was felt during the recent qualifiers held in Ismailia, Egypt, where the Speedy Tigers successfully punched their ticket to the 2026 Hockey World Cup.
However, the road ahead is paved with giants. The draw for the 2026 showpiece has placed Malaysia in a daunting Group B, where they will face Belgium (Currently ranked World No. 2), and Egypt (The clinical hosts of the qualifiers, looking to capitalize on home-field advantage.)
