Malaysia’s quest to replicate their 2024 podium finish ended in heartbreak today as the national men’s team fell 0–3 to a clinical Japanese side at the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) 2026.
The tie opened with a grueling singles battle between world No. 39 Justin Hoh and world No. 19 Yushi Tanaka. Despite a spirited second-set comeback where Justin saved match points to force a decider, he ultimately ran out of steam. Tanaka’s relentless pace secured a 21-17, 20-22, 21-11 victory, marking Justin’s third consecutive defeat against the Japanese ace.
Hopes for a doubles revival were quickly extinguished when Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King stepped onto the court. Facing the 2021 world champions and current world No. 9 pair, Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, the Malaysians struggled to impose their game. The Japanese duo delivered a masterclass in flat-fast exchanges, winning comfortably 21-14, 21-12 in just 35 minutes
With Malaysia trailing 0–2, the pressure fell on Aidil Sholeh to keep the tie alive. Aidil started brilliantly, clinching a nail-biting first set 22-20 against Koki Watanabe. However, the world No. 23 Japanese star r.esponded with a tactical gear-shift that Aidil could not match, storming through the next two sets 21-11, 21-3 to seal Japan’s place in the semi-finals.
The quarter-final exit in Qingdao not only halts Malaysia’s title ambitions but also means the squad fails to qualify for the Thomas Cup Finals in Denmark this May on merit.
However, all is not lost. Malaysia’s strong position in the world team rankings (currently top 10) means the squad is virtually guaranteed to qualify as one of the three highest-ranked nations among those who didn’t progress through continental championships.
