Malaysia’s campaign in the 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC) got off to a disappointing start as they fell 2-3 to Hong Kong in their opening Group A match on Wednesday.

Despite fielding a strong squad, Malaysia struggled to capitalize on key moments, leaving them in a precarious position ahead of their must-win clash against Indonesia.

Malaysia’s challenge began with Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in the mixed doubles, taking on Hong Kong’s Tan Chung Man-Ng Tsz Yau. The Malaysian duo started strong but lost momentum as their opponents grew into the match. After 59 minutes of intense rallies, Chung Man-Tsz Yau emerged victorious with a 17-21, 21-17, 21-11 win, handing Hong Kong the first point of the tie.

In the women’s singles, national shuttler K. Letshanaa put on a commanding performance to bring Malaysia back into contention. She outplayed Saloni Mehta with a composed and aggressive approach, securing a 21-18, 21-18 victory in 46 minutes to level the tie at 1-1.

With momentum on their side, Malaysia looked to Justin Hoh in the men’s singles. Tasked with facing Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, ranked 21st in the world, the young Malaysian put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short. Despite a promising start, Justin succumbed 19-21, 16-21, handing Hong Kong a crucial second point.

The pressure mounted as Malaysia’s Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing took on Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam in the women’s doubles. Pei Kee-Mei Xing fought valiantly but failed to find a breakthrough, eventually losing in straight sets. With that, Hong Kong secured an unassailable 3-1 lead, confirming Malaysia’s defeat.

Despite the overall loss, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun salvaged some pride for Malaysia in the men’s doubles. The dynamic pair carried their fine form from previous tournaments, dismantling Hung Kuei Chun-Lui Chun Wai in under 30 minutes to claim Malaysia’s second point of the tie. However, it was too little, too late, as Hong Kong sealed an unexpected 3-2 victory.

Malaysia now faces a daunting task in their final Group A fixture against Indonesia on Thursday. With only the top two teams advancing to the knockout rounds, a win is imperative for Malaysia to keep their championship hopes alive. Indonesia, coming off a dominant 5-0 win over Hong Kong, will pose a significant challenge, requiring Malaysia to regroup quickly and deliver a flawless performance.
