Vietnam secured their place in the ASEAN U23 Mandiri Cup 2025 final after a spirited comeback saw them edge past the Philippines 2-1 on Friday at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
In their historic first appearance in the tournament’s semi-finals, the Philippines stunned Vietnam by taking the lead in the 36th minute. Javier Mariona capitalized on a defensive lapse following Jian Caraig’s long throw-in, finishing from close range after Noah Leddel knocked the ball into his path.
However, Vietnam responded swiftly. In the 41st minute, Nguyễn Đình Bắc drew his side level. After his initial header from Nguyễn Phi Hoàng’s cross hit the inside of the post, Đình Bắc reacted quickest to slot home the rebound—his second goal in as many matches after scoring the winner against Cambodia on Tuesday.
Just a minute later, Đình Bắc had a golden opportunity to double his tally after being played through by Nguyễn Công Phượng, but he dragged his shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Vietnam continued to pile on the pressure after the break. Công Phượng came close with a powerful header in the 52nd minute, forcing a superb diving save from Philippines goalkeeper Nico Guimarães.
But Guimarães could do nothing two minutes later when Nguyễn Xuân Bắc rose highest to meet another pinpoint cross from Phi Hoàng, sending a looping header into the top corner to give Vietnam a 2-1 lead.
Despite valiant efforts, the Philippines couldn’t find a way back. Vietnam nearly extended their lead late on when Lê Văn Thuận fired wide from inside the box after being picked out by Phi Hoàng.
In stoppage time, Vietnam looked poised for a third goal as Nguyễn Quốc Việt broke through, only to be fouled at the edge of the area by Leddel, who was shown a red card for the challenge.
With this victory, Vietnam have reached the final of the ASEAN U23 tournament for the third consecutive edition. They will now await the winner of the other semi-final between host nation Indonesia and former champions Thailand, with the final set for Tuesday at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
