Malaysia national team Defeated for the first time after losing to the Vietnam national team with a score of 0-3 in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 Group stage, Group B at the My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi.
Playing in the cool and windy weather, the match started slowly which saw both teams play evenly matched in the first 15 minutes.
After that, the game started to move swiftly with Vietnam making several attempts, especially in the 20th minute through Nguyen Hoang Duc’s swift pass which went a little off the mark.
Vietnam was in the front nine minutes later through the net of the venomous attacker, Nguyen Tien Linh who headed into Do Hung Dung’s corner.
Vietnam’s joy at celebrating the scoreline however was hampered when they were reduced to 10 men after Nguyen Van Toan was shown a red card in the 32nd minute following his violent tackle on Dominic Tan.
When Harimau Malaya tried to come back in search of an equalizer, controversy erupted in the 59th minute when Japanese referee Ryuji Sato awarded Vietnam a penalty when Azam Azmi Murad was charged with fouling Doan Van Hau.
The judge’s decision was tried to be disputed by the Malaysia players because there was no roughness seen by Azam towards Van Hau in the penalty box, but the two players struggled off the field after both of them fell when they grabbed the ball.
The incident also saw the match halted for about five minutes and more unfortunate fate befell the Malayan Tigers when Azam was shown a red card before Que Ngoc Hai had completed the penalty kick.
In fact, Nguyen Hoang Duc completed a Vietnam-style victory when he scored the third goal when the match was seven minutes away.
The decision saw Vietnam snatch top spot in Group B, sharing six points with Malaysia and Singapore.
