Bangkok United claimed a crucial 1-0 away win over Gamba Osaka in the first-leg semi-final of their AFC Champions League Two 2025/26 clash at the Suita City Football Stadium, Osaka.
Coached by Totchtawan Sripan, Bangkok United entered the match with a lineup largely similar to the one that defeated Sukhothai FC 2-0 in domestic competition, making only minor adjustments with Teerasil Dangda and Wanchai Jarunongkran coming into the starting XI.
Bangkok United adopted a disciplined defensive approach while looking to strike on the counterattack. Their patience paid off in the 11th minute when they won a corner that resulted in a handball inside the Gamba Osaka penalty area, prompting the referee to award a spot kick.
Three minutes later, Muhsen Al-Ghassani stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the Thai side a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
The home side responded with several attempts through Issam Jebali and Ryoya Yamashita, but none were able to trouble Bangkok United’s defense before halftime.
Gamba Osaka increased their intensity after the break, creating multiple opportunities. Yamashita and Ryotaro Meshino both came close, while Jebali also missed a clear header from inside the penalty area.
Despite the pressure, Bangkok United held firm at the back with goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai making key saves to preserve their narrow advantage.
The match took another twist in the 74th minute when Shinnosuke Nakatani received a red card for handball, giving the visitors a numerical advantage for the closing stages.
Bangkok United nearly doubled their lead through Rungrath Phumichantuek, but the Gamba Osaka goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny the attempt.
Gamba Osaka tried to find a late equaliser with long-range efforts, including a strike from Genta Miura, but the Thai side remained resolute until the final whistle.
The result gives Bangkok United a valuable first-leg advantage before the decisive second leg at Rajamangala National Stadium on 15 April.
