The “Magic Night” promised by Xisco Muñoz became a reality. Under the glowing canopy of the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium (SSI), Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) secured a monumental 1-0 victory over J-League titans Vissel Kobe, officially booking their ticket to the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 Round of 16.
In a match defined by high-octane intensity and VAR-induced heart palpitations, the Southern Tigers proved they belong among Asia’s elite, navigating a night where the offside flag almost became their biggest enemy.
The first half was a masterclass in goalkeeping. JDT’s Andoni Zubiaurre justified his selection with a massive save against Jean Patric in the 20th minute, while at the other end, Shuichi Gonda produced heroics to deny a thunderous strike from Bergson da Silva.
JDT thought they had broken the deadlock when Nene fired home from inside the box, but the SSI crowd’s roar was cut short as VAR intervened, flagging three JDT players for offside in the buildup.
The second half saw more of the same “so close, yet so far” frustration for the hosts. In the 58th minute, Marcos Guilherme latched onto a brilliant Bergson pass and found the net, only for the linesman to raise the flag once more. It was a testing night for JDT’s tactical discipline as they looked to break down a stubborn Japanese defense.
With the game hanging in the balance, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 73rd minute. Substitute Jairo da Silva proved to be the game-changer, delivering a “world-class” assist that allowed JDT to finally pierce Gonda’s armor.
The stadium erupted as the goal was cleared, sealing a result that means the Southern Tigers no longer have to look over their shoulder at other results—they are through on their own merit.
